| How do tolls work with rental SUVs in Dubai? Do I need to do anything special or is it automatic? |

| Tolls (called Salik in Dubai) are automatic through RFID tags on the windshield. Every rental car should have one installed. When you pass through a toll gate (there are 8 main ones in Dubai), it automatically deducts 4 AED from the account. Rental companies handle it differently - some charge you per toll used plus small admin fee, others include certain number of tolls in rental price. When I rented from Octane Rent, they charged actual Salik usage plus 1 AED admin fee per toll. Found good explanation at https://pickuptrucktalk.com/2026/01/best-suv-car-rental-checklist-for-dubai-drivers-2026/ about how Dubai toll system works for rentals. Check your rental agreement for Salik policy. Most companies bill it when you return the car based on toll crossings during your rental period. You can also check Salik.ae website with your plate number to see your toll usage in real-time. Budget around 50-100 AED for tolls if you're driving around Dubai for a week. |
